SCOTTISH BUDGET PROMOTES SPORT IN SCHOOLS IN SCOTLAND’S WORLD CUP YEAR
Local MSP Stuart McMillan has welcomed the passing of the Scottish Budget which will fund a range of programmes for a ‘summer of sport’ for schoolchildren in Inverclydeand across Scotland.
This summer, thousands of young Scots are set to access a range of free sport activities in a range of primary schools between 3-6pm – freeing up time for hardworking families and promoting healthy living.
The Budget also expands access to free swimming lessons to every single primary school child in Scotland.
In 2026, Scotland will host the Commonwealth Games and return to the World Cup for the first time in nearly 30 years – a combination that will make summer 2026 the summer of sport for Scottish schoolchildren.
Commenting, Stuart said:
“I warmly welcome the SNP government’s plan to rollout further free sport activities in schools, including free swimming lessons for all primary school children.
“These opportunities will help reduce costs for families, deliver more wraparound care after school, and encourage healthy lifestyles.
“With the Commonwealth games and the World Cup this summer, 2026 is set to be a year to remember for Scottish sport.”
